Sharing Goodwill on the Smiling Coast

Ramadan Trip to The Gambia

Happy to be back in The Gambia, fondly known as the “Smiling Coast.” It was the start of our first charity trip of 2024, coinciding beautifully with the holy month of Ramadan. The journey was more than just a physical one, it was a return to a place overflowing with warmth, generosity and a spirit of community we’ve come to deeply cherish.

Our mission on this trip was already underway. The much-awaited shipment of donations, sent by sea in December, had arrived safely, and we got on with the work of distribution. We delivered essential supplies to families and the local clinics we support, knowing that every package would ease a burden and bring a smile to a face.

This trip held a special significance, woven into the fabric of Ramadan as a time of reflection, fasting sharing and giving, we focused on providing both cash and rice and vegetables for families, we wanted to make a meaningful difference during this important period. So far, our efforts have resulted in distributing an incredible 900kg of rice to 18 families, 132 people in total. The sheer volume of kindness, a combined effort from friends, family, and colleagues was truly humbling.

Then came the joyous celebration of Eid al-Fitr. The atmosphere was electric, filled with vibrant colours laughter and the aroma of delicious food. We we’re welcomed with open arms by families and friends, invited to share in the elaborate Eid feasts and observe the dazzling array of traditional outfits. We we’re overwhelmed by the genuine joy and hospitality we encountered at every turn. It’s a constant reminder of the enormous hearts and warmth of the people here, and yes, we confess, we left a few pounds heavier. The Gambia is a place where shared meals aren’t a rarity, but a way of life. It’s this spirit of togetherness and the sheer abundance of Gambian generosity that continues to draw us back.
